When NASA and JPL scientists needed a new Mars simulant to support the development of the Mars Phoenix lander, they developed Mojave Mars Simulant, a processed iron-rich basalt that was a good geologic analog to the surface of Mars. However, they recommended that additives be used to bring the chemical composition of the simulant as close to that of real Martian regolith as possible. So that's what we did.

We start with Super Fine grade Mojave Mars Simulant, then add Iron III Oxide, Magnesium Oxide, Sulfates and Silicates. This lets us adjust the composition and ratios of the chemical compounds in MMS-2, creating a simulant that is a more than 90% chemical match to the surface of Mars.
